About The Whitsundays

A Must Do On Your East Coast Itinerary

Each year more than 500,000 visitors make the East Coast pilgrimage and flock to the stunning Whitsundays. This beautiful pocket of Queensland, set below the stunning Conway Ranges, is home to a huge mix of land and aquatic attractions. The region's trade wind conditions, coupled with its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef combines to produce ideal conditions for world class sailing, year round diving and some of the best underwater adventures on earth.

There are 74 unspoiled islands in The Whitsundays waiting to be discovered or rediscovered... and under the turquoise waters hard corals and hundreds of fish species co-exist in the shallow fringing reefs. There's great diving, fantastic snorkelling... and did we mention the sailing????

The friendly team at Palace Adventures can help book your Whitsunday sailing adventure, bundle a Fraser Island and Whitsunday cruise package, recommend great backpacker accommodation in the Whitsundays and send you sailing on a tall ship.

This aquatic playground place is actually a submerged landscape? The islands are tips of mountains surrounded by corals - and some 70% of the region is protected Marine and National park.

Plenty to see and plenty to do!

AIRLIE BEACH - is a backpacker must-do and a good place to base yourself, book a tour and plan your time in the Whitsundays. This small town is party central and offers a number of groovy restaurants and plenty of bars and clubs for some kick-ass partying!  This is also a place where you're likely to reconnect with travellers you've met on your journey or make lots of new friends.

Check out the following:

  • Abel Point Marina - Main Street, Airlie Beach
  • The Big Mango - Bruce Highway, Mount Gordon
  • Whitsunday Great Walk - Conway State Forest, Whitsundays

If you are stocking up on food stuffs - head to the Airlie Beach Supermarket, Whitsundays Shopping Centre, and Fausts Super IGA on Shute Harbour Drive.

The absolute best way to get around this part of the world is to take to the aqua-coloured waters and cruise your way round and Palace Adventures can help out with a cruise to suit. A number of reputable companies offer yacht cruises or you can grab a group of like-minded travellers and hire a private charter... whichever way you choose to go, you're in for a treat.

WHITEHAVEN BEACH - is one of the true jewels of the Whitsundays and a definite must-see on your itinerary. Whitehaven's pure-white sandy arc-shaped beach is surrounded by turquoise waters and is a great place to while away the hours and take the perfect pictures of your Australian adventure.

WATER SPORTS – Calling all sun bunnies and water babies - guided cruise and sail tours might be really popular, but this part of Queensland lends itself to swimming, snorkelling and soaking up the sun.

With warm, clear waters, teeming with marine life, and the world's largest coral reef - you'll be in scuba diver's paradise.

Check out Bait Reef - one of the most spectacular locations on the reef. Bait Reef is perfect for snorkellers and divers and is known for its underwater canyons and coral gardens - which you'll share with turtles and manta rays.

Hardy Reef (and the Reefworld pontoon) is another top spot. This 'patch' reef is suitable for beginners and experienced divers - with all dives conducted along a 70m reef wall.

NATIONAL PARKS – For a 'wild' adventure, why not head to one of the region's national parks for some quality time in the great outdoors. For a small fee you can pick up a camping permit and take to the tracks for some adventure bush walking. This region is also famous for platypus spotting - just ask at the info centres for the best times to head out.
